9 must-know cheese rules to live by!

Navigating through the delicious world of cheese can be tricky. How should you store it? When is the best time to serve it? To grate or not to grate? The questions are endless! To help you out, we’ve pulled together a list of nine must-know cheese rules every cheese lover should live by — check them out below!

Cheese Wheels

 

It’s all in the storage

English cheese, especially our creamy Cheddar, should be snuggly wrapped in parchment paper or stored away in an airtight container in the bottom part of your fridge to prevent the loss of moisture which makes it so tasty.

Keep away from the freezer

Unless you’re planning to use it in a mouth-watering cheesy dish in the future, NEVER freeze your cheese! Freezing cheese will completely obliterate the incredible flavors, aroma and texture it has to offer, making a crumbly dissatisfying mess once thawed.

The best way to grate

Grating cheese is SO much easier when it’s cold. Whether you use a microplane grater, box grater or cheese slicer, make sure to shred your cheese straight after taking it out of the refrigerator. Grating cheese also intensifies the flavor (win!) as it has a larger surface area than sliced or cubed cheese, giving your tastebuds a greater area to embrace!

Cheese Melting

The lower the heat, the better it melts

When melting cheese for your favorite recipe, make sure to use a low heat. Slow and gradual temperature changes will prevent the fat from separating out of the melting cheese and keep it from losing its taste. To preserve its luscious flavor, add the cheese to your recipe at the end of the cooking process so it just reaches its melting point.

To bring out the mind-blowing flavor of the cheese, you should always serve it at room temperature. Remove the cheese from the fridge at least two hours before it’s time to serve and keep loosely wrapped in parchment paper so it can adapt to the perfect serving temperature… yummy!

It’s not just about taste, embrace the aroma too

The aroma of the cheese plays a huge part in the overall tasting experience! Don’t be afraid to give the cheese a little discreet sniff before you take a bite – it can actually help to intensify the taste of the cheese.

Cheese knives – a must-have!

Using one knife to cut your cheese selection is a no go – do you really want your Cheddar to taste like Goat Cheese mixed with Stilton? It’s super-important to use one knife for every variety of cheese when serving as to not mix the flavors and create a tastebud disaster.

A ‘fork-tipped spear’ knife cuts and slices a variety of firm cheeses and its fork tip can be used to serve cheese to guests, while an ‘open wok blade’ knife can be used especially to cut soft cheeses such as Brie. The possibilities are endless!

Cheese board rules 

A well chosen and beautifully presented cheese board can go a long way in truly impressing cheese addicts at your dinner party. Make sure to keep the tasty selection on offer limited to three to five cheeses with different textures, tastes and aromas.
